Spice Up Your Life: Jalan Jalan Sligo

It took me wayy too long to think of a title for this blog – shout out to my mum who helped me come up with one. On Saturday my mum and I finally went to Jalan Jalan in Sligo to see what all the fuss was about. Let me just say, we were not disappointed. Jalan Jalan is a relatively new Asian street food restaurant which focuses on fresh, exciting food. It’s a really nice addition to Sligo, sometimes you feel like something different for lunch or dinner and Jalan Jalan definitely hits the mark.

The first thing we noticed when we walked in was the decor – it’s a really cool chilled out atmosphere. I love the copper and wire light pendants, the elephant head sculptures on the wall and the bright colours. We were immediately greeted by the friendly staff and were given both a lunch menu and a normal menu which I assume is also the dinner menu. I went straight for the dinner menu because I really wanted to try one of their tofu dishes. The one thing I’ll say about the lunch menu is there were no vegetarian options on it, but the staff there are so accommodating I couldn’t see this being an issue if you asked them.

There was plenty of choice on the menu so no matter what your taste, if you like spicy or mild, healthy or a little bit more indulgent, meat/fish eater or veggie, you’ll be spoilt for choice. After a  lot of deliberating, mum went for the crispy sweet chilli chicken and I chose tofu in black bean sauce which is one of my favourite takeaway dishes.

In my experience Asian restaurants always cook tofu absolutely perfectly – Jalan Jalan was no exception. I couldn’t fault my dish, only that I wished there was more of it as it was so tasty! Everything was really fresh, flavourful, and it didn’t take long to come out either but I wouldn’t have minded waiting, the food was that good. Mum said hers was divine too, you can read her blog about it here. Our meals came with boiled rice so there was a lot of food, and we also shared some noodles which were the nicest noodles I’ve ever had.

We decided after our perfect main course we’d have to try a dessert each too, for research purposes and also I just really love dessert. I went for the Belgian chocolate pudding and mum had bannoffee pie, a classic. I have to be honest and say the dessert wasn’t as nice as the main course, I’m not sure if someone else makes the desserts but they weren’t the freshest or most decadent but they were still tasty and I love the skull shaped spoons, so cool! However I probably wouldn’t have a dessert there again if I’m 100% honest. Regardless, it didn’t taint my experience – I’m still salivating thinking about the tofu now!

We left with full bellies and both agreed we’d be back. It’s mine and Laurence’s 3 year dating-anniversary soon so maybe I’ll be back sooner rather than later! Jalan Jalan also have restaurants in Ballina and Galway so if you’re ever around the west of Ireland definitely pay them a visit – you won’t be disappointed.

This post isn’t sponsored or paid for, we paid for our own meal and it was worth every cent!
